For 500 years, from 1341 until the French Revolution, the “Eberbacher Hof”—one of the major administrative centers of the Eberbach estate in the 14th century—stood on the site of today’s Ebertor Park Restaurant. The estate’s demise came with the French Revolution. The estate’s last steward, Benedikt Kalt, purchased the property for 3,675 francs.
In the last quarter of the 19th century, the property passed into the possession of Franz, the eldest son of Michael Thonet—a furniture manufacturer originally from Boppard—who had an elaborate villa built on the site of the estate. Until March 16, 1945, when the villa went up in flames after being hit by artillery fire, the magnificent estate served various purposes, including as a spa hotel, a “city garden,” and as ‘Hotel Rheinterrasse.’
In 1949, the property finally passed from the Thonet estate—owned by Gertrude Stoeck, née Andreae—to the Fußhöller family, who began rebuilding the house in 1953.
